What Is a Boomerang GIF Creator?

This is a browser-based program that converts animated GIF files into GIFs with the boomerang effect. The boomerang effect repeats a video or an animation over and over from the start to the end and back to the start again. As the original GIF is repeated, the number of frames in the boomerang GIF is double the number of frames in the original GIF. By default, the boomerang is created from all the frames in a GIF but you can select individual frames or a frame range that will be used to create the boomerang. In the frame selection option, the value "*" means all frames, the value "2-12" means use frames 2 to 12 (inclusive), and the value "1, 3, 5, 7, 11" means use individual odd frames 1, 3, 5, 7, 11. The boomerang is looped forever but you can change how many loops the boomerang performs. The loop options include playing the boomerang GIF only once, playing it a specific number of times, or playing it endlessly forever. Often, the boomerang looks much better if it's played faster or slower, so we also added options to change the boomerang playback speed. By default, the boomerang speed is equal to the input GIF speed, which is 100% when expressed in percent (see the speed option). If you want to speed up the animation, increase the speed percentage (for example, if you enter 200% speed, then the animation will play at twice the original input speed), if you want to slow down the animation, decrease the percentage (for example, if you enter 50% speed, then the animation will play at half the original speed). Additionally, you can enable the "Slow Down in the Middle" option, which slightly changes the boomerang effect. In this case, the last frames of the input GIF (which are now in the middle of the boomerang) are slowed a little bit. To play and pause the boomerang in the browser, use the "Preview Boomerang" option. All information about the input GIF video and the newly created boomerang video can be viewed in the options. You can download the boomerang GIF below the boomerang player. Gifabulous!

Endless Boomerang GIF

This example creates a forever repeating boomerang of making cake-cream decorations. The input GIF consists of 8 frames, which are played back at a speed of 100ms per frame. The output boomerang consists of 16 frames and they are played back at the original speed. (Source: Pexels.)

Boomerang from Specific Frames

In this example, we created a boomerang video from a specific range of frames. The input GIF has 45 frames and we entered "32-40" in the boomerang-frames option. This way, we picked a range of frames from the 32nd to 40th frame (a total of 9 frames) and turned them into an endlessly cyclical boomerang with 18 frames. We also slowed down the framerate of the output animation to 80%. The animation itself shows Matcha tea preparation process. (Source: Pexels.)

Slow Motion Effect

In this example, the input GIF has captured a moment of an adventurous boy jumping over a puddle. We apply the boomerang effect to the GIF and get the boy jumping over the puddle back and forth. To make the animation more lively, we double the playback speed and at the same time add the slow-down effect to the middle of the boomerang. The slow-down effect linearly decreases the framerate of the video animation starting from the middle and then increases it again towards the end of it. We also make the boomerang go a finite number of repetitions. After 6 loops it stops. (Source: Pexels.)

Quick and Short Boomerang

In this example, we select just a couple of frames to create a boomerang of a moving car. The output animation consists of frames 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, that are also looped back 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1. The total number of frames is 10 and the speed of GIF frames is increased to 120%. (Source: Pexels.)

Single Loop Boomerang

In this example, we create a boomerang clip that repeats only once. The output consists of 40 frames – 20 of which have the bicycle moving forward, and the other 20 return the bicycle to its original position. For a quicker boomerang, we increase the clip playback speed to 250 percent and now the frame delay is just 40ms. (Source: Pexels.)
