This online utility lets you convert raw BMP (bitmap) graphics files into static GIF images. As GIFs support transparency, the tool offers an option to remove the background from the BMP and create a transparent GIF. By default, the output GIF is the standard, opaque one. This tool converts BMP (bitmap) images into GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) images. BMP is an uncompressed raster format that stores image data as a grid of uncompressed pixels, preserving high visual quality but resulting in very large file sizes. In contrast, GIF uses LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) lossless compression and supports up to 256 colors per frame, making it ideal for web graphics, icons, and simple animations due to its small file size. One of GIF's key features is its ability to support transparency, where a single selected color can be rendered fully invisible. This makes it particularly useful for generating GIF assets for embedded systems where storage space is limited, creating GIF sprites with transparency for 2D games, and creating images for environments that require strict 8-bit color formats, such as custom firmware. To create transparency in your converted GIF, enable the "Create GIF Transparency" checkbox in the tool options, and then select the color you want to make transparent by clicking on it in the BMP image that you uploaded. The tool also offers a "Color Match Tolerance" setting, which determines how strictly colors are matched for transparency. By entering a percentage value here (from 0% to 100%), you can expand the range of colors that will be treated as similar to the selected one and made transparent. A value of 0% matches only the exact color selected, while higher values include similar shades based on color distance calculations. Keep in mind that GIF only supports binary transparency – pixels are either fully transparent or fully opaque, and there's no partial (alpha) translucency. Additionally, in the "BMP and GIF Data" section of the options, you can view useful information about the input and output files, including their formats, transparency status, and file dimensions. If you need to do the reverse conversion, try our GIF to BMP Converter tool. Gifabulous!

In this example, we convert a high-quality bitmap image of frozen blueberries into a single-frame, static GIF. Even though the input bitmap uses uncompressed pixels and millions of colors, the output GIF with its 256 colors keeps the image quality remarkably high. This is because we use an effective color quantization algorithm that keeps the necessary shades in the final GIF to make it look super close to the original bitmap. (Source: Pexels.)
In this example, we highlight a problem of the GIF format when dealing with photos that have smooth color gradients, like this sunset in Sydney. The input BMP, with its 24-bit colors and raw pixel data representation, perfectly renders the color transitions in the sky. However, the output GIF, with its 8-bit colors, has a limited color range and struggles with rendering this part of the photo. The sky has noticeable color banding and looks less smooth. The main benefit of a GIF in this case is its smaller file size. (Source: Pexels.)
In this example, we're working with a BMP image of a plant in a pink vase, and our goal is to remove the background via GIF transparency. Since the GIF format supports only solid transparency (not partial transparency), we select a specific RGB value from the background (by clicking on it) and remove all matching pixels. For color keying, we use a 16% color match tolerance level to also remove similar background shades near the plant's edges. (Source: Pexels.)
